Daily Bulletin - August 2010

Perhaps we have known it all along; we just haven't come face-to-face with the facts. Teenagers today are becoming "fake" Christians. A recent CNN article confirms suspicions that young adults today are "viewing God as a ‘divine therapist' whose goal is to boost people's self-esteem." ...

This past weekend, approximately 300,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to call attention to the need for a religious rebirth in America. The rally, called Restore America, was held in exactly the same spot as Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech," which was delivered 47 years earlier....

If ever a teacher needed Solomon's wisdom to resolve disputes, it's a Christian school teacher. Since we are with students sometimes longer than we are with our own families, we face more countless instances of conflict. Unfortunately, Christian school students are no different than other students and will fight over the most trivial things....

The times, they are a changin'. Instead of brick-and-mortar colleges, some are predicting the evolution of higher learning will soon be mainly online. Many colleges are "catching up" with the market shift to digital-based learning and are being challenged to ramp up their online class selections. Even the Microsoft mogul Bill Gates is touting the end of place-based learning. "Five years from now on the web for free you'll be able to find the best lectures in the world. It will be better than any single university," he said. ...

A news story was posted recently on a popular online search engine about a school in Los Angeles that will open next month. The school will be situated on the former site of the Ambassador Hotel, the site of Robert Kennedy's assassination. Appropriately enough, the school will be named the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools. All very straight forward, right? That's true—until you hear the price tag of $578 million. That's right, I said million. ...

Okay, so here's a question: Why do they call it "back to school"? Have you ever thought about it? Sure, this ubiquitous phrase can be found in all the autumn-flavored advertising campaigns, reminding us that students can't get by without the newest clothes, backpacks, folders, and tech tools. Even the most cynical of us adults (and teachers) can't escape the desire to purchase a jarful of sharpened Number 2 pencils and a fresh notebook or two when August and September roll around....

In recent news, the United States House and Senate have approved a $26 billion bill in state aid to school districts and states to prevent large scale layoffs of public school teachers and government employees. Passed along majority lines, President Barak Obama was quick to sign this measure and praise Democrats for saving American jobs. American jobs? Perhaps American government jobs might be more accurate. ...

Tech-munication is not really a word, but technology and communication seem to be merging faster and faster these days. It's happening so much that sometimes we're not sure were one stops and the other begins.

A recent Pew Research Center survey found that "40 percent of adults use the Internet, email, or instant messaging, up from 32 percent in 2009. ...

Sometimes as Christian educators in Christian schools it's easy to think that only religious schools are the ones sharing God's message with students. It's a good reminder for us to think about Christian teachers who work in public schools.

Arguably, Christian teachers in public schools face more challenges and restrictions in sharing the Gospel message. It's crucial to keep in mind both private and public schools are areas to witness and that Christian teachers in all areas should be upheld and supported. ...

How quickly sweet summer goes! It seems like the last bell of spring class just rang not more then a minute ago, doesn't it? Yet, the hands of time keep moving. Summer is definitely that time of year when students—and no doubt teachers—look forward too all year. Vacations, swimming, camp, and just plain relaxing—that's what summer break was invented for, after all. ...
