This past weekend, approximately 300,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. to call attention to the need for a religious rebirth in America. The rally, called Restore America, was held in exactly the same spot as Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech," which was delivered 47 years earlier.
Lead by a Fox news broadcaster Glenn Beck, the rally also featured former 2008 U.S. Vice President candidate Sarah Palin as a speaker. Trying to focus on religious conservatism in America, the rally's purpose was to call America back to God and to encourage spiritual revival within the country. According to The New York Times, Palin said, "We must not fundamentally transform America as some would want; we must restore America and restore her honor."
Many attendees who met at the rally have been reported as a mix of groups that have formed under the Tea Party umbrella, promoting conservative fiscal responsibility. Taking the spirit of King's speech, the rally expressed concern over the liberalism of the country and the progressive nature of social polices and entitlement programs. Beck urged attendees to begin a spiritual revival saying, "For too long, this country has wandered in darkness. . . . "
What do you think of the Restore America rally? What role do you think Christian educators play in the spiritual framework of the country?
