Timed reading tests for comprehension can be a killer for students. No matter how hard they try, they always seem to miss one or two questions because they are not able to read the entire story within the allotted time. Sometimes students also find timed reading tests quite frustrating because they wanted to get every question correct.
Teaching students to speed read and retain information quickly is a necessity in our fast-paced lifestyles. Society seems to be in a hurry. We hurry to eat at fast food restaurants, speed in our cars to work and activities, and quickly surf through scores of Internet information or television programs. Even as Christian educators, we struggle with teaching the amount of information required within the class time allotment.
There is one thing in life, however, that you cannot hurry - a mature faith in the Lord. Spiritual growth cannot be sped up by the wants of any person. Nurtured by the Holy Spirit and God's Word, we simply grow at His own rate. No amount of practice or preparation can cause the process to go any faster. His utmost concern is for us to be rooted and grounded to withstand the storms of life when they come. "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith" (Colossians 2:6-7a).
Are you in a hurry right now as a teacher? Are you between rushing from one place to another? Is a quick devotional the only time you have planned to spend with the Lord? If so, slow down! Enjoy God's presence. Let the Holy Spirit fill you and teach you from the Word, so you can get the answers right on the tests you will face today.
What actions do you do to remind yourself to slow down and savor God's presence? Share with other teachers!
