Last month, Switched-On Online™ users received a tip about how to add video tutorials in Switched-On Online to create customized projects. This month, Switched-On Schoolhouse® users will be excited to learn they can also embed web links inside their projects. In fact, the advantage in Switched-On Schoolhouse is that special projects can be added either at the time you create a custom course or on the fly by editing the student's subject that has already been assigned.
Inserting URLs into a special project provides access to any video tutorials you have added to your course. To maximize your ability to personalize instruction for each of your students by integrating additional online tutorials in Switched-On Schoolhouse, follow these easy steps:
STEP 1: From the homepage, choose Assignments.
STEP 2: Choose the student.
STEP 3: Choose the subject.
STEP 4: Click on the Edit button in the lower left-hand corner.
STEP 5: In the Available Curriculum column on the right, click on the + icons to find the desired subject and unit.
STEP 6: Select the special project. Then, drag and drop it into the unit title on the left.
STEP 7: Projects always land at the bottom of the unit, so click on the Move Up button between the two columns to position the project in the same content area. This will maximize the student's comprehension of that concept.
STEP 8: Add a title to the new special project. Right-click and choose Edit Title or click the Edit Title button at the bottom of the page.
STEP 9: Press Enter to solidify the new title.
Note: You must save the edited course before attempting to add content. This step will require regeneration if you are using Advanced Lesson Planning.
STEP 10: From the Assignment tab, double-click the assignment you want to open.
STEP 11: Click on the Report button in the lower left-hand corner to open the project. Then, choose your word processing program when the Edit Project message appears.
STEP 12: Read the reminder and select OK when the Opening Project message appears. Remember to use "Save" and close the program when you are finished working in the project.
STEP 13: Type your customized instructions in the document.
Note: If you want students to turn in a hard copy of this project, be sure to include a line where students can write their name.
STEP 14: Find your tutorial. Thousands of free online tutorials are available on video sharing websites. Two of the most popular are YouTube and TeacherTube*. Use your favorite search engine and select the tutorial you feel most closely matches the concept you want to enhance.
STEP 15: Highlight and copy the video's URL (usually located on the right-hand side of the screen). Then, copy and paste the URL into your document.
STEP 16: To save the project, choose Save. Do not use "Save As." The tutorial is now assigned and will display as current schoolwork when all work is completed up to the tutorial.
STEP 17: To encourage students to complete the tutorial immediately, change the due date to the same day the concept is taught in Switched-On Schoolhouse. Remember, project due dates are the same date as the test.
