School Messenger - June 2010

Several months ago, we looked at the seven simple steps to launching your own Christian school website. Now that you've had time to launch your own website, we're going to take a closer look at how your Christian school can use your website to reach a wider audience of current and potential parents and students. Classes are over, students are home for the summer, and you are left to clean up and start preparing for the next school year. With a little Switched-On® preparation now, the fall term will begin smoothly for you and your students.

Hopefully you have utilized the backup feature of Switched-On Schoolhouse on a daily basis all year and have taken a copy of that backup to a safe place away from the actual school each week (in case anything happens to your building). Now, make a final backup and call it "2010 Final Backup." Store this backup on a CD, and keep it with your permanent records. If SOS ever requires a fresh installation, you can always restore this backup to your Switched-On system to recover any completed student work....

Like it or not, our children are growing up in the age of technology. Our first response is to pull back, to protect them from exposure to inappropriate outside influences, and to stick with what we know. Unfortunately, what we know about technology is much less than what they know.

As the use of technology both in and out of the classroom continues to grow at an alarming rate, it's important to remember the words of Sir Francis Bacon, "Knowledge is power."

As Christian educators, we need to learn about the current trends in technology and find a way to respond and to implement them into our schools. ...

In recent months, much attention has been given to the issue of bullying in schools. The most prominent case occurred in Massachusetts where nine teens were charged in connection with the suicidal death of a 15-year-old fellow student who reportedly endured weeks of bullying.

Bullying is certainly not the only troubling issue facing today's youth. Hardly a week goes by without reports of other abhorrent events, mystifying adults who attempt to pick up the pieces with tedious scrutiny, in an often futile attempt to forgo repeat episodes.

Many views are expressed regarding the cause of such actions and how future occurrences can be prevented. These events can often become a rallying cry for the cause of Christian education, a cause which I strongly support. ...
