River of Life Christian School (RLCS) was founded in 1976 as Payette Christian Academy, in the basement of Payette Assembly of God. The present facility was built in 1980. We just completed construction on a second building to house 1st-2nd Grade, an elective classroom, and a chapel. We also purchased an additional bus to help accommodate the 30% increase in enrollment this year. We offer K4-12th Grade as well as child care for ages 0-12. For over 30 years our school has had a rich impact on our community by providing graduates who go on to succeed as a pastor, missionary, business owner, recording artist, police officer, and mayor. Many of our alumni choose to send their own children to our school, or return to provide leadership in our school as a teacher, youth pastor, or school administrator. This testifies to our vision, which is: Fulfilling the Great Commission by preparing students for life and eternity.
Every year we explain to staff, parents, and students our three objectives in accomplishing this vision. Our first goal: To actively draw each student into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. The second goal: To create an environment where students feel loved, safe, and secure. Finally: To prepare students academically so they can be all God wants them to be. Our effort to meet this final goal is what inspired us to make a change.
In 2002 our school took a step into the future by establishing a computer network, with a computer for each student in 3rd-12th Grade, switching to Alpha Omega Publications' Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum (SOS). One of the main reasons for this decision was that our students were testing below grade level on their annual achievement tests. We were concerned about raising these scores and felt that the curriculum we were originally using had not kept pace with our need for academic advancement. After five years of using SOS, we are so glad we made the switch.
Our students have truly benefited from using the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum for their five core subjects. SOS has developed our students' critical thinking skills. The proof is seeing our average SAT scores climb higher for the last four years. By using newly updated curriculum each year, our students have raised their average grade equivalent almost two grade levels. Even though our student body includes quite a few students needing extra help, our average student now tests above the 60th percentile in the nation. Although we are not satisfied with staying at this level, we are confident that God has given us the curriculum and staff to ensure quality learning takes place. We look forward to continuing the upward trend in our achievement scores.
Switched-On Schoolhouse has also made education more convenient. Our parents especially appreciate the opportunity to view their child's grades at any time through the online homework system. Teachers have more time to plan elective classes since much of the scoring and grading is done automatically. The majority of students respond well to the system of individualized attention and hands-on learning. We believe we are teaching students today how they will work tomorrow.
As we strive toward the vision God has given to RLCS, we are thankful for the dedicated people and effective tools with which He has blessed us. We rejoice that we have the privilege of playing an active role in helping prepare the next generation for God's glory. With God's help, we will fulfill that purpose.
