Very few Christian schools really teach current events, meaning they teach with constantly up-to-date news items correlated with biblical principles, a Christian worldview, and the godly heritage of American government. For years as a Christian school teacher and principal, I didn't teach it on that level either for lack of an affordable, teacher-friendly curriculum that accomplished all that without spending hours in preparation.
Now, recently retired from my full-time Christian school ministry, including teaching in one of the first schools to adopt AOP's SOS curriculum, I am investing time most teachers don't have to edit the only current events curriculum that puts a convenient weekly update in the teacher's hands. Written for high school students, "The Times and the Scriptures" can also be easily adapted for middle school students.
Every Friday morning, the teacher receives via email a two-page "Weekly Bulletin" for the following week's classes. It usually contains five or six items of news just a few hours or days old, accompanied by discussion questions relating the news to scriptural principles and cross-references to more thorough articles called "Backgrounders" on recurring news topics.
The teacher receives a three-ring notebook with all the Backgrounders (currently 49 of them) that are updated and supplemented. The issues raised include abortion, poverty, taxes, separation of church and state, Christian education, immigration, evolution, voting, marriage, and dozens of others.
"The Times and the Scriptures" includes reading quizzes and vocabulary development quizzes with quiz keys for all the Backgrounder articles. Each article also includes suggested composition topics. In addition, our website offers scores of convenient links to additional good websites on these topics, creating rich opportunities for student research.
Based on 1 Chronicles 12:32, which refers to "men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do," "The Times and the Scriptures" is an excellent curriculum for teaching current events at your Christian school.
