Technology is changing the face of education. If you have been a teacher for many years, you remember the numerous hours spent grading research papers by hand. However, with the advent of the computer-age, teachers now have resources that make grading students' work easier and more efficient. With all the assignments that need grading available from one easy location in the At-a-Glance tab, Switched-On Schoolhouse® is definitely a beneficial technology tool for teachers.

However, Switched-On Schoolhouse is also a benefit for students. With the integration of Microsoft® Word inside Switched-On Schoolhouse, you can provide better and more efficient means of communication as you develop your students' research and writing skills.

One not-so-well-known feature in Word is the Comment feature. Use of the Comment feature significantly improves and streamlines the writing process. Because learning to write is a process that requires drafts and rewrites, sending electronic papers back and forth is a great tool to provide students with valuable teacher input and help them master advanced writing techniques.

To use the Comment feature, follow these easy steps:

1. Open your student's project or research paper within Switched-On. Be sure to select Microsoft Office Word.

2. Highlight the sentence or paragraph about which you wish to comment. (Hold down your left mouse button and drag across the entire sentence, part of the sentence, or entire paragraph).

3. Choose Control-Alt-M. (Hold down all three at one time).

4. Type your comment in the colored box found on the right side.

5. Should you wish to remove a comment, just right-click on the comment in the right column and choose "Delete Comment."

6. Be sure to choose "Save" when you are finished.

7. Before exiting, you must choose ReWork to send it back to the student.

8. When the student opens the project assignment again, the comments will appear. The student will make corrections and leave the comments on the right. If the student has questions or statements regarding the teacher's comments, he or she can use the same comment box. It would be helpful if your students are instructed to use a different font.
