School Messenger - Two Schools - One Ministry

We have been in Christian education for thirty-two years and have served at Boulevard Christian School for the past twenty-five years. During these years we have utilized several curricula and philosophies, but have found Switched-On Schoolhouse® from Alpha Omega Publications® to be most effective.

We have had two schools for the past nine years. When a family inquires about our schools, we listen very carefully and answer their questions. At some point we inquire about their church attendance. If they have a church home and are looking for a school that complements their home and church, we give them a tour of our main campus, Boulevard Christian School. If they aren't involved in church and are looking for help with their children, we tell them about our other campus, Graham Hall, and invite them to visit to see if we can help.

Ten years ago we didn't have a choice. Parents and students with special needs wanted our help, but for several reasons, we knew we couldn't enroll them in Boulevard Christian. For the past nine years we have had the privilege of working with some of these parents and students. We now have a separate and distinct learning center, Graham Hall, in which each student has a large desk with a computer, and uses Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum. We have four teachers, and God usually sends us fifteen to twenty students a year. The curriculum gives us a lot of freedom. We can sit with each child and help him individually, and because we have several teachers, we can spend hours with each child. We never have to worry about our students' quality of education, and we know they are challenged and encouraged to think and learn about everything from God's point of view. We have the freedom to add conventional classes, college courses, vocational classes, field trips, and other curriculum if the students have special needs. This freedom enables us to spend time helping with emotional intelligence, social development, and spiritual training.

Our two schools are one ministry of our church. Both of us work with children at both campuses. Students from both schools participate in chapel services, trips, athletic teams, and other activities together, as well as separately. We share the same goals and the same school board. Depending on their needs, the students may change from one school to the other. Having the same curriculum at both campuses and having Internet access to their curriculum from home gives students more flexibility and choices. Having two campuses provides more opportunity to minister to children with different backgrounds and spiritual needs. As the Lord leads, we highly encourage other schools to consider this option as well.
