Since Victory Christian Academy opened in 1988 in Mount Vernon, Illinois, the school has promised students two things when they enroll. First, they seek to develop Christian character in each student. Secondly, the school promises to prepare each student for college based upon their individual interests and abilities.
For years, the school had been looking for a computer program to meet their goals. They started using Switched-On Schoolhouse® from Alpha Omega Publications® six years ago, and last year they moved to Switched-On Online™, the web-based option of the Switched-On® program.
With the help of AOP's curriculum, Victory Christian Academy seeks to meet these goals by recognizing the importance of having an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student.
"In public school, we see a lot of Individualized Education Programs now being used for students," said Denise Olivier, the principal of Victory Christian Academy. "I've been saying for years we have an IEP for every student. We call them diagnostic tests!"
One success story at Victory Christian involves a girl with Asperger Syndrome, a neurobiological disorder marked by autistic behaviors. At the recommendation of special education specialists in her school district, the young girl transferred to Victory Christian after 8th grade. With the help of prayer and a dedicated staff, this student has enjoyed tremendous success. She was able to complete two years of history and geography in only one school year, and her parents have also been thrilled with the social growth they have seen in their daughter. In December, she hopes to graduate after only 3 ½ years at Victory Christian.
Another aspect at the forefront of the school's education is preparing students for college. While Denise's daughter was in college, Denise suggested that she create a goal sheet to help her split up her work. However, her daughter had already done that because of what she had learned from the Switched-On program. Denise's daughter finished that semester with the top grades in her class. Denise credits her daughter's success to the use of Switched-On and the principles of the school. In fact, Denise said that in many situations, their students, whether they were average, above average, or below average in high school, have excelled in college "because they know how to learn."
Because of these experiences and more, Alpha Omega Publications is proud to partner with Victory Christian Academy to educate, inspire, and change the lives of their students and families. At AOP, we are assured God's work will continue to be done at this Christian school.
