Five school leaders from Nigeria traveled over 6,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean to attend the Ignite Conference on October 7 in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, Minnesota.

Among those in attendance was Naomi Panya, a superintendent of over 200 Christian schools (13,000 students), who has been working for several years to move the schools to AOP curriculum. The other four are school administrators who run schools in Nigeria.

“They came to the Ignite conference to learn more about AOP as a whole and specifically Ignitia,” said Chris Lundy, AOP’s Educational Consultant for International Schools. “In a divided country, their mission is to use Christian education to turn the tide away from the violent way of life of many there and raise a new generation of educated children who will lead the country in a new direction.”

Known as the “Giant of Africa,” Nigeria is the seventh most populous country in world. Though the official language there is English, the population consists of over 500 ethnic groups. Lundy said, however, that the nation’s wide variety of cultures is just one reason we should lift these school leaders and their students up in prayer.

“There have been some real financial challenges in the last year, as the Nigerian government has prevented any money from being sent out of the country,” added Lundy, “so prayers would be appreciated to find a way to overcome that.”

The keynote speaker at the Minneapolis symposium was Jason Yarbrough, the senior pastor of Monterey Bay Christian Center, superintendent of Real Life Christian School, and author of Building Strong Foundations. Overall, 18 people representing 9 schools or organizations attended the event in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

A week later, 35 people from 12 schools or organizations met at the Ignite Conference in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas. Attendees from as far away as New York were blessed to hear keynote speaker Billie McConnell, the chair of the Graduate School of Education at Ohio Valley University in Vienna, West Virginia.

AOP also recently hosted a conference in Orlando featuring Michael Burroughs, the Executive Director of the International League of Christian Schools. The Ignite Conference season will conclude in February in Houston, where AOP is looking forward to making a difference and meeting even more amazing educators around the world!
