As a part of the LIFEPAC 1st Grade Language Arts curriculum from Alpha Omega Publications, Reading Basics Book 2 is a colorful reader that features 24 easy-to-read stories that increase in length and difficulty. Utilizing 1- and 2-syllable, short vowel words, the reader includes important phonics concepts, such as short vowel words, beginning and ending consonant digraphs, consonant blends, and compound words.

In addition, Cotton Candy, the second in a series of five readers, utilizes the inclusion of high-frequency words, which are also called sight words or instant words, to increase the interest level of the stories. Since drilling of high-frequency sight words helps to increase fluency, Reading Basics Book 2 lists all instant words utilized within the reader.
